Most linguistics programs put few to no graduates in the PGI market, while a choose number of programs put a majority of TT task holders in this market. This is possibly a sobering picture of the current scholastic job market, however one that is essential for present and prospective graduate trainees to comprehend. However, our data also point to methods that the leading programs may effect positive change in the discipline. As a quick example, we take a look at some facets of gender representation in linguistics placements, one of a variety of problems of diversity and representation that the field need to continue to address (see e.g., LSA 2019, Namboodiripad et al. Reference Namboodiripad, Hou and Occhino2019, Charity Hudley et al. Reference Charity Hudley, Mallinson and Bucholtz2020).
In its 2021 yearly report, the LSA supplies data showing that females surpass males in both undergraduate and graduate linguistics programs (Figure 3), which the rate at which females have actually received linguistics PhDs has eclipsed that of males over the majority of the past 25 years (Figure 4). Nonetheless, LSA information also suggest that in the typical linguistics department, men have a small mathematical lead over females at both the (Full) Professor and the Assistant (untenured) levels, despite the fact that the latter is where we might expect to see the best recent growth of females employs (Figure 5).
